Three outdoor doubles courts on the Berner Heerweg, in use since the middle of 2016. That makes SC Condor Hamburg's padel pioneers by several years, and the venue is comfortable saying so. Court 3 is the piece of history: the first roofed padel court in Germany, which means outdoor feel and a guaranteed match in weather that closes everything else in the city.

Courts 1 and 2 are drained artificial turf and playable all year, including in what the venue calls Hamburger Schietwetter — the exception is ice and snow, when they close to protect the turf and your ankles, and the venue explicitly asks nobody to clear them. Between April and October the Thursday Open Plays are the thing to know about: a supervised rotation, rackets and balls included, €10 for guests, no formal registration.

Getting there

Ten minutes on foot from U1 Farmsen — genuinely good public transport for an outdoor venue, and the reason this works for a group coming from different corners. Bookings are online through Playtomic only, for members and guests alike.

Running a session here

SC Condor Padel has 3 courts, and a 90-minute booking is the slot to plan around. That fixes almost everything else about the evening.

  • Bring 12 to 16 players. 12 is everyone on court every round; past that you are running a sit-out queue, which is fine but somebody has to track it.
  • Expect about 6 rounds once you take out warm-up and changeovers — play each to 32 points so every court finishes together and the scores stay comparable.
  • At 16 players, 4 people sit out each round. 3 courts tops out at 16 players before the sit-out queue is longer than the court time.

Formats that fit

  • Americano a full rotation at 12 players is 11 rounds and the booking holds 6, so you play a slice of it. Fine for an evening, but the standings are a snapshot rather than a complete table.
  • Mexicano re-pairs by the standings each round, so the games stay close. 6 rounds is enough for the table to mean something.
  • King of the Court winners move up a court, losers move down. Works from 6 rounds on 3 courts.

If you book fewer courts

Three courts is twelve players on court with a ceiling of sixteen, and twelve is a size that works properly here: a full Americano rotation is eleven rounds, and a 90-minute booking gives thirteen at 16 points. Set the target at 16 and the whole rotation finishes, which is a complete table on three courts.

The roofed court is the insurance policy. If you have collected money from twelve people for a November evening, book court 3 as part of the group and you have somewhere to put the last rounds if the other two go off — no other Hamburg venue offers that.

For a group where half have never played, the Thursday Open Play is a better first session than a private booking: a supervised rotation, equipment included, €10 a head.
