Cologne's university sports department has had padel on campus since 2013, which makes these two artificial-turf courts among the oldest in the city. They are floodlit, they sit at the Zülpicher Wall in the middle of the student quarter, and there is a sun terrace with seating, a music system and a barbecue beside them — the least corporate padel in this city by a distance.

The pricing is the reason to read this page carefully, because it is tiered by who you are rather than by when you play. A 90-minute evening court is €22.50 for students, €30 for employees and €37.50 for guests; a weekday-morning hour is €10, €15 and €20. Nothing else in Cologne comes close for a student group. Rackets are €2 each and should be booked online in advance, balls are €6 a can, and you collect the key at the Info-Point against a deposit.

Two things will catch out a first-time booker. Courts release on Tuesdays at 09:00 for the following week and nothing is bookable further ahead than that, so a fixed weekly slot is a weekly alarm. And at the time of writing only one of the two courts is available, because of renovation work.

Getting there

Zülpicher Wall 1, on the university campus and inside the Zülpicher Viertel — walkable and served by trams from most of the inner city, which no other padel venue in Cologne can claim.

Running a session here

UniSport² Köln has 2 courts, and a 90-minute booking is the slot to plan around. That fixes almost everything else about the evening.

  • Bring 8 to 10 players. 8 is everyone on court every round; past that you are running a sit-out queue, which is fine but somebody has to track it.
  • Expect about 6 rounds once you take out warm-up and changeovers — play each to 32 points so every court finishes together and the scores stay comparable.
  • At 10 players, 2 people sit out each round. 2 courts tops out at 10 players before the sit-out queue is longer than the court time.

Formats that fit

  • Americano a full rotation at 8 players is 7 rounds and the booking holds 6, so you play a slice of it. Fine for an evening, but the standings are a snapshot rather than a complete table.
  • Mexicano re-pairs by the standings each round, so the games stay close. 6 rounds is enough for the table to mean something.
  • King of the Court winners move up a court, losers move down. Works from 4 rounds on 2 courts.

If you book fewer courts

Two courts is eight players and a ceiling of ten, but check the court count before you invite eight: with one court closed for renovation, this is a four-player booking. That is the single most important thing on this page.

At eight players a full Americano is seven rounds, and a 90-minute slot gives thirteen at 16 points, so the rotation completes comfortably — one of the few Cologne venues where a whole table finishes inside one booking.

The Tuesday 09:00 release is the real constraint on organising anything regular. Everyone in a student city wants the same evening slots, so the booking is a calendar entry for the organiser rather than something to do the day before.

Cancellation is only free by email up to 24 hours ahead, and after that the money is gone whether anybody plays or not. Collect from the group before the deadline, not on the day.
